Very.  Most new lists and most new listservers, appear to be using 
Mailman.  For example, the cobalt lists (this one and the others) are 
all hosted on Mailman.

I'm not familiar enough with Lyris to know the specific differences, but 
Mailman certainly has all the functionality a listmanager needs.

I don't know of any "tricks".
