You can do that, but the drive will be just extra storage.
You would have to edit /etc/fstab to mount it. Then use is as extra
storage or maybe use it as a backup drive. Using rsync or dd to copy hda
to hdb. You could not run standard RaQ RAID1.

sometimes mixing different types of RAM (not the size) will not run
properly.
Yes, you can use the 256MB alone.
