There has been talk from time to time about either migrating the list or
switching to using forums. Personally I hate forums intensely, because
I have to consciously go to a website and click over and over again to
see what's going on.
I, among others, have been willing to start replacement lists, but I
don't think anyone has suggested it be done.

MARC should be good enough, but I believe this is a standard mailman
list with it's own archive as well.
Additionally, I archive it locally. Using the Maildir format (a
separate file per post/reply) and Kmail running on Linux, I should be
able to keep it growing indefinitely. I've got 3,229 messages in the
store now, and no signs of slowdowns when I search or do anything else.
Prior to using KMail I stored it in Netscape Mail, and I had to break
off the store every two or three months.
