[cobalt-users] New images for Qube 3 and Raq 550

Hi Guys

I have only been dealing with cobalt gear for about a month now so please bear
with me if this is a stupid question and someone else is already doing it..

I have looked at all the various Cobalt related projects on SF.net as well as
the numerous different package download sites scattered across the net, but
it all seeems to be very piecemeal.

Has anyone actually sat down and created new Cobalt Qube 3/Raq 550 image CDs
with updated packages and kernels? Obviously this could go as far as taking
RH9 and the code at http://sourceforge.net/projects/sausalito/ and rolling an
entirely new OS, but I was (firstly) thinking of something a little easier.

In particular the most annoying thing I find about all these pretty blue boxes
is that they run the ext2 filesystem which IMO should have been taken out to
die long ago. Is there any technical reason why ReiserFS couldn't be
supported on these machines (ext3 could be supported also for those who just
want to upgrade without the hassle of an export and import)??

I would also love to have them run postfix and amavis by default which looks
like it wouldn't take too long to do..

Is anyone else interested in such a project? I will probably do it myself
anyway when I get time, but tips/tricks/pointers/you're an idiot peter would
all be appreciated in advance..

Also does anyone have the actual build scripts that Sun/Cobalt used to build
the CD Images?? I know that I can edit the ISO images directly on a loopback
filesystem, but I am wondering how much stuff Sun has actually released?

<rant>
Also, is it just me, or is the rebuild procedure a major pain in the
proverbial?!!?? I can see no good reason that there is such a limited list of
network cards supported by default! If knoppix can detect and use my sound
card and graphics card without any help the Cobalt rebuild CD sure as hell
should be able to use any network card I might have without having to
manually modprobe drivers....
</rant>

As I have around 20 Qube customers to support until the end of the universe, I
believe a these few modifications would make my life alot easier.

Comments? Questions? Flames?
