Passwords are correct and APOP has been switched on/off to correct the
problem, with no effect. This issue does not occur with other users and only 
on one computer in the users network.

I am grateful for any suggestions anybody might have!
Mail.app does not support APOP, that's why the error. Fortunately GNUMail does, it's a directly rewrite from Mail for the NeXT-platform - It looks and feel like Mail.app.
