As I understand it the key issue at the time was in two parts, one the
startup current of the faster drives and the other was the in use heat
dissipation wattage of the drives.
I suspect that in a lot of modern drives that technology has moved on to the
point where the faster drives probably use less of both than a slower drives
from a few years ago.
The answer would really come from comparing datasheets for the exiting
drives and the ones you intend to fit, plus making sure the new drives are
rated for useage in a server environment.
