[cobalt-users] How many "httpd" processes?

I am a newbie, be kind. :)
I have a RAQ2 and it is completely maxed out with RAM and hard drive, but it
still screams bloody murder all day long about being out of CPU and MEMORY.
The server only has 7 pathetic small sites, so it should be sleeping not
dying. I have sat and watched "top" for hours to see what is killing it, but
nothing. I can watch it go from a .8 CPU load to about 20+ and just one or
two random scripts executing for milliseconds at the time every once and a
while. There are always about 60-80 processes always running on my system
and that usually doesn't include scripts. The only thing that I can see
that I don't understand is what is the process "httpd" and how many of them
should it be?
Anyone, with any insight into this, will you please help me?
thanks for you time,
chad
