I don't understand why it is so annoying.  But there is a good reason for
these type of rewrite rules.  On an older server I had a CGI counter that
would show one number for www.domain.com visitors and another much lower
number for domain.com visitors.  Once this site was moved to my Raq3 this
behavior went away because of rewrite rules.

Just one example but I am sure there are others.
