1) Is telnet just not responding or do you
have any error messages in your logs?
2) Can you telnet in at all or connect via a serial
port?
If so what do you get if you type
df
and
w
3) Is it possible that your box has been compromised and the
daemon replaced with "hacked" versions? Do you have any unknown users in your
passwd file or assigned to the group wheel or root?
4) If you haven't yet you should install SSH and always use
that to connect to the server instead of telnet.
5) Have you compared your /usr/bin/telnet with a know good one
(binary diff, not file size)
6) If all telnet access is dead do you have telnet disable in
your /etc/inetd.conf?
Wish you luck.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Summary: TELNET
IS STILL DOWN! (Long)
Hi All,
Thanks for the feedback, I'm summarizing what
I've been getting back. The problem still exists and when it does get
fixed, I'll post a follow up.
That this point two other RAQ3 customers
have reported the same problem. One interesting correlation is that it
happened at about the 30 day mark. If true, it may be associated with
something that happens on a monthly basis, and we'll start seeing more reports
as boxes hit their anniversary date.
>Frank - You probably checked ...but when you
went into the http interface...did you give yourself >telnet rights
???
Yes,
Telnet is enabled for the base site and for it's two users. All of the
account names display the same symptoms.
>Gerald - Are you
absolutely sure that your telnet client is sending plain ASCII text, I
am aware of a >couple of people that had this problem, and there telnet
client was not set up properly! >The telnet server will accept
anything for a password even though it looks correct on the
screen!
At
this point we've used three different telnet clients in our attempts to access
the box. One Mac client and two windows client. I don't know which
Mac client (I'm only now being converted to a Macophile :-). On the
Windows NT side, I used telnet (Which was working fine before for a long time)
and the Hyperterminal package (Actually better than MS telnet by a fair bit,
get the latest one from their site).

you tried resetting the admin password through the gui? > 2.
Rebooted through the gui? > 3. Rebooted at the
console?
Yes,
we've reset the password several times. The password still works for UI
and FTP Yes,
we've rebooted through the
GUI. Yes,
we've rebooted from the front panel.

thing I've learned. In my experience, when it says login not >correct,
it means the password is wrong, or the username does not exist, or

I
agree Cobalt has a super box...I just troubled by the lack of response.
I'd normally agree about the user name/password, but in this case I
still have access via the UI and FTP.
While "admin" is not root, it is
a wheel (Sorry old time concept that has faded away, it means someone
who can su to root). So should not have (many)
restrictions.
We'll try the hardware reset button (I don't remember if
we've tried it or not. Yes, shell is enabled.

Again...Thanks everybody...If you have any more
ideas....Or if you have the problem....Get a hold of me so that we can compare
notes! COBALT, I'd particularly love to compare notes with
you!
