gcc 2.95 is not really ready for prime time on the MIPS arch yet.  You have
two problems.

 o binutils isn't ready
 o only cc works with any reliability.

At the present time, I still use egcs-1.0.2 for compiling and it works without
a hitch.  Is there a reason you are trying to upgrade?
