By "threads" I mean that it will list emails this way:
Who Date Subject
==================================================================
Joe Smith 12/14/99 04:00 HTML
Bill Jones 12/16/99 12:52 Re: HTML

James Argo 11/22/99 13:02 Is this what you mean
Bill Jones 01/13/00 14:59 Re: Is this what you mean
Note that this is extremely different than sorting on Subject. Sorting on
Subject, even if the sort algorithm is smart enough to ignore the "Re: ",
still sorts by date, and not by which post is answering which post (the way
news readers typically do it.
For example, here's how Eudora would sort the above:
Who Date Subject
==================================================================
Joe Smith 12/14/99 04:00 HTML
Bill Jones 12/16/99 12:52 Re: HTML

James Argo 11/22/99 13:02 Is this what you mean
Bill Jones 01/13/00 14:59 Re: Is this what you mean
Note that it becomes impossible to tell that my first response was to Bill
and my second response to Joe.
Also, Eudora wouldn't properly thread this reply (the one you're reading)
into the proper thread based on sorting, because I've renamed. A mail
client that threads will understand it's been renamed, and still thred it
properly.
To thread properly, email clients must know how to both create and use
reference headers. It's rare. But quite important. Netscape does this
admirably. As does Agent. But unfortunately neither of them handle
mutliple personalities.
How about Calypso?
I use Calypso, not a freebie but a very good mail package. Very
configurable.
I don't remember "free" being part of my requirements list. True, I use a
lot of open source software.
I also own and use complete licensed Enterprise Editions of Microsoft
Visual Studio, Office, Delphi, etc., etc., etc. And I even sell a
mailserver that users can run on NT instead of sendmail on unix/linux, at
<www.mailtraqna.com>.
It will pick up mail from loads of different mailboxes and when creating
mail allows you to select from a number of "From" addresses. If this is
what you mean by "multiple personalities" perhaps this is the client for you.
Yes. This is what I mean. I already own and use Eudroa. What would it
take for me to switch, then? Threading <smile>.
Can it run multiple "sessions" of Calypso at the same time? That's an
important need to; I keep my business subdirectories quite separate from my
personal ones.
Take a look at www.mcsdallas.com
I will, but please let me know of your experience, so I don't waste my time
evaluating software I'll end up not using because of a specific lack.
Thanks.
Good luck and regards Tim Prowting.
PS. Gee, I hope this helps, it will be the first time I have been able
to "Give" something back to this list.
Great! Keep wetting your feet, don't be afraid of the water, and
eventually you'll be swimming with the big guys (and the sharks, too <wry
grin>).
PPS. I have no connection with Calypso, other than the fact that I'm a
very satisfied user.
If you did, I'd still want to know about it <smile>.
