I use Outlook Express, with a number of mail accounts and message rules set
up.
Because I have multiple mail accounts, when I want to send or reply to an
e-mail, I see a "From:" field (above the "To:" field) - this contains my
default account address, but allows me to choose from the other accounts in
a drop-down list.
I use the message rules to split my incoming mail into individual folders on
the basis of what account they were read under, as well as what text appears
in subject or message body. So, not everything goes into my "Inbox".
So, I read mail from the "admin" account on the Qube into a folder named
"Qube Admin". All the mail addressed to "cobalt-" (covers "users" and
"developers") goes into "Cobalt Lists", unless it only has to do with RaQs -
these go directly to the "Deleted Items" folder, because I'm not really
interested in them - I also apply colour coding to these according to what
text I find in subject or message body. I do similar things with other
mailing lists that I'm on.
I've only done a cursory investigation of Outlook 98, but I believe it
provides the same facilities. I think it also allows message rules to apply
to outgoing messages, so that they can be directed to particular folders,
and not all end up in "Sent Items" - may be even storing replies in the same
folder as the item being replied to. I just haven't switched to using
Outlook 98 because of bad experiences with Outlook 97 regularly causing my
PC to hang - and Outlook Express works well for me!
