First, thanks to the gurus on this list! Been reading the

I've set it up with Primary and Secondary name servers. When I
register a new domain, and use my ns1 and ns2 for the name
servers, what is required that I set up on my Raq for that
domain? (It's may not be a live web site for a while.)

Do you mean you've registered two nameservers with your registrar (often
Network Solutions), or that you've created both primary and secondary records?
If the latter, then you don't know enough about DNS to set it up. If the
former, then you've created an extremely non-robust solution; you know
enough about DNS to be dangerous.
I keep reiterating you can't just do DNS; it's a critical service; you need
to understand it.
Read the book. It's called "DNS and Bind" and it's from O'Reilly. Do all
the examples (skip the compiling and installing; just use the gui to turn
it on).
(Before you do the samples, be sure to copy out all the files to someplace
safe, so you can delete everything you've done and copy them back in later.)
Once you understand it, then you can use the gui.
Or hire a professional.

Do I need to just create an "A" record, or, does it need more..
like a PTR and or an MX entry too?
Two NS records, at least two A records, and (if you want to accept mail) an
MX record at minimum, all pointing correctly.
PTR records are wasted unless your upstream has delegated reverse DNS to
you, and they usually don't do that unless you've bought a c-block. And if
you've bought a c-block, you should have someone on staff who understands DNS.
I'm really sorry, I don't mean to sound rude. I do get tired of writing
the same things over and over again. A good book has already been
written. Read it.
