Re: [cobalt-users] Setting up Email

At 12:44 PM 3/14/00 -0800, you wrote:

I'm running the latest RaQ3... I will be hosting multiple virtual domains.
When setting up email, I'll be using "mail.xyz.com" as the mail server.

"xyz.com" being the customer's domain, different for each site? Or your domain, the same for all sites?

Relay for the following Hosts/Domains:
"The following is a list of IP networks, host names, and Internet domain
names that are allowed to use this server to relay mail. To allow a remote
user to send and receive email, add their computer name, IP network, or
Internet domain name to this list."
===> I have put abc.com, def.com, ghi.com here, but do I need to put the
IP's and/or the www.abc.com addys also?

In the documentation for Mailtraq, or Windows-based mailserver, we advise putting in all three. But in practice on the Raq I just let it do it's thing automatically (which is to add the domain name without the host-name, and also the IP#), and it seems to work fine.

However, this field is only for domains that will be SENDING mail through the RaQ, and is quite insecure behavior since anyone can spoof anyone's return address.

I'd suggest you tell your customers to use their ISPs server for outgoing mail, or install POP before SMTP.

When you check the "Receive mail for domain" box when setting up or changing a domain configuration, the Raq will do everything it needs to do to receive mail for a domain.

Host/Domains Aliases:
"The following is a list of host name and Internet domain name aliases that
this server will receive mail for. If you intend to receive mail addressed
directly to your domain name, add that name here."
===> I have put abc.com, def.com, ghi.com here, but do I need to put the
IP's and/or the www.abc.com addys also?

I just let my RaQ fill this in automatically; I never touch it.

If so, why?

The reason to do it is in case mail actuall has an address or return address such as:

jeff@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
jeff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
jeff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

And then of course there's another varient you should allow for if you're really covering all bases: jeff@[123.122.121.22].

Now all the email being handled by mail.xyz.com, the manual says you cannot
have duplicate email names accros all the domains on the same machine. BUT I
do know that every webmaster will want webmaster@xxxxxxxxxxxxx I know there
has to be a way around this with aliases or something...?

Sure. Make your user something like john123, and alias him to john@xxxxxxxxxx and webmaster@xxxxxxxxxxx

Jeff
