Re: e: [cobalt-users] Admin site limits - long

At 11:33 AM 3/13/00 -0800, you wrote:

*grin..yup..so it always seemed funny to me why Cobalt would market this machine to Linux "newbies" (me) and never inform us of this limit..all the time saying the machine can hold 200 domains and never a work-around for the group limits...except for creating site admins. What if an owner/siteadmin decided you didn't need to be a "user" on his domain? Off into his trashcan I go..:) I give many of my site owners siteadmin status so they can view stats and set up mailing lists etc. from the web. In actuality, I maintain their web site. I wouldn't want to be deleted by some owner because he got curious or confused.

Personally, I don't use the ISP business model that Cobalt has built into the RaQ series. But a lot of people do, and it works well for them, or else companies wouldn't buy RaQs fifty at a time <smile>.

The RaQ model includes you giving admin privileges to a site admin, and s/he controls the administration for the website. Of course you could make yourself the site Admin, and just give the "owner" the privileges he needs. I do it this way. You can even give the "owner" upload ability, without compromising your "admin" rights. But then you end up defining mail users, etc. (That's the way I like it <smile>.)

*sheepish grin here...there I was writing out examples and forgot to give a real life one...thanks Jeff, you are correct.

I'm a firm believer in examples <smile>. Cut's customer support.

If both files need to be the same, then presumably you could just edit
group and then do:

# cp group group-

gosh..I learn something new every day...:) I love this list. This one tip will make my life much easier....and my partner won't have to listen to my little cheers of joy because I was able to edit the shadow file without mistake the first time...*grin. Or the groans that are almost as common..;)

I'd love to know what "group-" is for. It's probably used by the gui for something; it's NOT a part of any standard Linux I've ever used.

Unless the north central Florida climate has changed a lot since I lived in
Gainesville in the 60s, I'd argue that my home in the southern California
desert gets a lot more sun (though it did rain here almost every day for
about a month approx. Feb 9th through March 8th). Have you ever gone to
Doug's Dairy Twirl in Gainesville for an ice-cream cone? There was an
original Doug, about 35 years ago; I remember him well. I should be in
Florida this summer; maybe we'll say hello <smile>.

You may get more sun..:):) but that doesn't detract from the fact that we get LOTS too..:):) and our rains sure go a long way towards preventing that desert situation you mention...*VBG

Florida's supposed to be in a drought this winter, while we got a month of run.

(The balance of this particular subject matter taken offlist, since it's not about RaQs <smile>.)

I would be tickled if you say hello while here..:) As a Linux newbie and reader of this list, I've always been educated by your posts, and I have your info on file if I ever need your expertise..:)

Good; that's how I make my money <very big grin>! Actually, I got the RaQ so I could start my THIRD ISP. My first was in Jacksonville in 1994-95; we were one of the first webspace providers in the U.S.

thanks Jeff..:)

You're very welcome, as always <smile>.

Jeff
