Just a new guy here to the list. I will be purchasing 2 RaQ3's to host web
sites, and the first thing I want to do is, of course, get them set up
right. The first question I have is setting up the name server portion.
Have you read the book "DNS and Bind", from O'Reilly?
If not, do it first.
I
want to set this up so that I can also set up name servers for those that
are hosting with me. (I am guessing this would be an alias of my name
server...)
Why in the world would you want a nameserver for each domain? Each
nameserver will require it's own IP#. There's no reason to have individual
nameservers, even as aliases. One name-server can host literally thousands
of zones.
New at this and looking for any advive or help anyone can give to get these
servers off to a solid start. (and what NOT to do too)
Be sure to understand what DNS is, and does, and how to use it before you
start.
Then we'll be happy to answer specific questions.
That said, having two machines is a start. Robust DNS requires two
separate servers on two separate networks; a primary and a secondary.
Since you're new and everyone else on the list already knows it, I suppose
I won't get in too much trouble for letting you know that we
(Nobaloney.net) are in the DNS business (at <http://www.ns-one.net/>. We
also do DNS consulting, and have recently become specialists in doing it on
RaQs. We also answer specific questions on the list.
Good luck in your new undertakings!
