This is what I thought all along, but searching the various domain name
specifications I can only find the following rule pertaining to hyphens:
"A domain name may not begin or end with a hyphen"
Plus, I do a lookup on the NetSol web site for a domain such as a--b.com,
which reports the name as available and asks me if I'd like to register it
(along with the .net & .org variations)!
You'd figure that NetSol (being the oldest .com registrar) would complain
about such a domain if it was invalid and not allow the registration to pass
through the system. I dunno....
