Actually, you dont have to pay this maintenance fee if you dont want to, it
is optional. Without it, you just pay for support and upgrades as you need
them once the first year is over.
I must be missing something, what "standard" are you referring to about free
upgrades. Most of the software we have ever used requires upgrades charges
everytime a new version is released? All version of Windows, FTP programs,
mail servers, HTML design software, paint programs, word processing
programs, spreadsheets, billing, checkbook, web stat programs, you name it.
Unless it was free to start with or part of some hardware package, there is
almost always an upgrade fee.
