At 09:50 AM 3/1/00 -0500, you wrote:
Portable IP space is not necessary at all for an ASN or BGP. Arin is only
giving our /19's right now for portable IP space. If having portable IP

tremendously slow...hmm, I could prolly do BGP on a 2501 :)
You can have redundancy without BGP, it just is a hairy pain. You also
have to have name servers on both networks, two ip addresses for
everything and some pretty nice upstreams but it is possible.
Okay, I was VERY oversimplifying and exaggerating, to make a point
<smile>. I don't manage BGP myself, and I'm not thoroughly familiar with
it. I apologize. NOBALONEY should mean what it says.
PC based routers are very much alive, see http://www.etinc.com
Before you buy, search the archives of the Internet Access list (Send
'subscribe' in the body to 'list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' to subscribe;
'inet@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' is the human contact address). Look for etinc.com.
See what the big-name ISPs (as well as the little guys) say about 'em.
That all being said, I would never stake a business whether it be hosting
or just needing net connectivity on cable or DSL. If you don't understand
why I said that then you need to hit the books and understand each
technology, their benefits and negative implications concerning data.
That being said, I certainly agree <smile>.
