I have one word. Co-Locate.
Most cable companies don't allow servers and even if they did, there service
is too unreliable. DSL is ok, depending on your area, but most DSL service
has a high eligibility for discard so you are much more likely to drop
packets. Normally if you are concerned about availability, co-locate or
lease raq space! This will give you the most reliable bandwidth for your
buck.
Final note, When making a business decision such as this you have to look at
the technology involved and its pricing. DSL is cheap for high bandwidth...
Now having said that, A backbone UUnet connection (T1) is 2400.00 per month.
In my area they will sell you 1/2 that bandwidth for $260.00 a month in
DSL... Do the math, most DSL providers have to really over sell their
backbone connections to make any money. While most ISP's do also, Not to the
extent DSL providers do. I have seen quite a few ISP's NOCs who are selling
DSL and if you knew their ratio for bandwidth you would run away
screaming... :))

Subject: [cobalt-users] switch router suggestions?
I need to set up some raqs to host a series of about 140 websites.
I'm wondering if I could start out by getting a cable and a DSL
internet connection for redundancy. What kind of a switch/router
should I use between the lines and my raqs? Is any one doing
something similar?
Steve
