You can view the original and the optimized picture side by side,
before saving. Smartsaver also supports the Netscape and Explorer
palettes.

Also your pictures are to big  Remember: you have only one palette for
the whole picture. If you split the picture in several smaller ones,
you will get better looking pictures.

Never use dithering. If you understand the compression algorithms, you
will know, that dithered pictures are allways to big, and at web
resolution they look bad.
