There are several companies making low profile / high density servers,
including but not limited to: Penguin Computing, VA Linux Systems, HP and
IBM, etc.

THe IBM solution you are talking about I believe would be the Netfinity
4000R. 1U tall, 1 or 2 Pentium IIIs, etc.

The catch is, as from what I've HEARD is that: Sure, its 1U but its like 3
feet deep. I haven't ever been able to confirm this. If someone can look
up the technote on Ingram Micro or something and get an exact dimension,
it'd be appreaciated. I don't have the access anymore.

HP has the LPr, which is 2U and a really cool machine.

If you are looking for something like this, I wouldn't suggest talking to
your local computer shop, but a VAR who is authorized IBM and/or HP and has
expererience with internet servers. On the HP side, look for AdvanceNet
certification. There are a lot of things you meed to know about configuring
or even spec'ing out a HP Netserver. Not for the feint of heart, but there
is a reason for that--you're going to get a rock solid machine out of the
deal.

Cheers!
