Well......
For example, I can send an email to you with about 2,000 characters in the
subject line. With some email programs this might just cause a buffer
overflow, and allow those 2,000 characters to execute as code, deleting
your / partition.
Can this happen?

Yes, things like this happen all the time, but I made this one up.
