Ok, as the Postgres user I tried to create a db and the error was the
same:

[postgres@outpost pgsql]$ createdb rogdb
Connection to database 'template1' failed.
fe_sendauth: no password supplied

createdb: database creation failed on rogdb.
[postgres@outpost pgsql]$

Any clues.  I get the feeling that in this case, I'm missing something
fairly fundamental.  :P
