Many (not necessarily most) hosting companies do what you call #1; that is they allow their clients to share their secure server. Both Verisign and Thawte have told me this is in direct violation of their license. I've seen a posting on the Verisign website that says it's in direct violation of their license.

However, as I've said, many companies do it this way.

Generally your customers will NOT want to buy a certificate; it costs them anywheres from $125 to several hundreds of dollars.
