You can bypass the MySQL grant system (the functionality that requires
usernames/passwords) and create a new root user password.  I am pretty sure
I posted detailed instructions on how to do this towards the end of last
year.  And if I'm wrong someone else did.  Search the archive online.  Also,
join the MySQL user mailing list at mysql.org or search their archives.  It
is very valuable and your questions are more suited for that forum.
