I think you are a little confused.  MySQL is the database, and think of
php as the handler or scripting language that controls the display of your
MySQL data.

Two great places to start are http://php.net and http://mysql.org, both
sites have many links to other sites on the net with quite a few example
apps to base your beginning designs from.
