That's exactly what the utility FTPBACKUP does. It's incredible. I signed up for an outside provider hosting package (500M) simply as a safe backup location.

We have lines such as this one in our cron to run automatically (this one handles the /home directory):

10 5 * * 0-5 /bin/tar cfp - /home | gzip | /usr/local/bin/ftpbackup -h 216.71.xxx.xx -u anonymous -p myname@xxxxxxxxx -d /incoming -b bkp-home-daily.tar.gz
