Sorry, didn't mean to be cryptic.
To learn all these perfunctory geekulations, if you are a Linux innocent,
it's a real good idea to have a Linux or Unix box that you can practice on.
It doesn't cost anything. You just scout around for an old 486 which someone
is discarding, download Debian from www.debian.org (I suggest Debian because
it is very easy to install from seven floppies, and supports all sorts of
machines, even old PS2s with micro-channel) and there you are. One by one,
you can download and install docs and set up aliases and play with editors
like joe and investigate the mysteries of symbolic links and all sorts of
things. Very quickly, and without endangering your server configuration, you
could type "man passwd", for instance, read up on it, play around with it,
and decide how to do it, so that when you are ready to hack at your server,
you have a clue.
It's free, easy, and really worth it.
