Well this isn't strictly how most people would want it (or would they?), but
this is how I do my backup mail system for my personal domain (xanth.net if
it makes it any easier to follow).
I've got 2 MX entries. Priority 10 = mail2.xanth.net, Priority 20 =
mail.xanth.net
E-mails goto mail2 first (don't ask why it's mail2). Mail2 is setup so that
it accepts e-mail for xanth.net. Now this is where it gets a bit
complicated. I only have a few @xanth.net e-mail accounts on the mail2
server. I want everything else to goto mail1 (???) along with the few
accounts on mail2 if they can't get through.
Mail1 (Mail.xanth.net) is also setup to receive e-mail for @xanth.net AND
@backup.xanth.net (huh?)
Basically e-mail comes into mail2. It checks to see if it's in the 5 or 6
accounts for that machine. If so delivers locally using virtusertable. If
not it redirects using a nice feature which the RaQ2 take use of too:
@xanth.net %1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
So all e-mail to @xanth.net not recognized by the other local names also
setup goes to the same username @backup.xanth.net.
The MX record for backup.xanth.net is ONLY for mail1 NOT the initial server
of mail2 so mail2 has to send across the network to the backup server. Then
on mail1 I have an accept local e-mail for backup.xanth.net and another line
in virtusertable of:
@backup.xanth.net %1@xxxxxxxxx
Which redirects its name backto xanth.net and because that machine ALSO
picks up for @xanth.net it delivers it locally.
I find this works particularly well as if either server goes down I can get
all MY mail, and if mail1 goes down I can still get my mail AND because the
mail is in the local queue I can pull it out in a hurry if needed.
Hope that helps.

for a domain, example where the MX record is set at 10 for the primary and
20 for the backup. Where do you setup the number of retry to relay mail to
the primary mail server and where do you preset the time it will hold the
mail for relay before sending it back as undeliver?
Could someone post specific info regarding this matter... or possibly a web
site with more details about setting up a backup mail server in general.
All I know about the topic is:
1) DNS record gets MX preference 10 for primary and 20 for backup (as the
previous post mentioned)
and
2) somehow the backup server stores any and all email received, then
attempts to forward it to the primary at some interval of time.
How is all this set up using sendmail?!?
Jim
