Well, I didn't say that they are unnecessary but only that Reverse DNS has nothing to do with PTR records.

Yes, that's correct. For your domain's nameservers ns1/2.nameserv.com you must have PTR records, and a Reverse DNS entry in your
provider's routers pointing to your server (hostname.domain.com).
