There is only one disadvantage I see to Name Based Virtual Hosting, and
that is that when doing a nslookup, the name will resolve to the main
name/IP that it is associated with in the DNS. What are other ones? I
do not know of any.
Also, charging for IP's is not a puh, puh. You are not paying soley for
the IP addresses themselves, whether a provider gets them from their
provider or not. You are paying for the Admin costs. It takes time to
maintain a record of who has what IP's and we the ISP's have to report
who has what IP, and what they are doing with them. So basically, again,
you are paying for paper work, time, and larger more confussing routing
tables.
Also, not every ISP gets their IP's from their upscale providers. Some
get them directly from ARIN, and last I checked its about $2500 per /20
per year. (4096 IPs, or 16Cs) Again, this does not include the admin
costs and paperwork, the $500 a year member fee for ARIN, and more...
