Typically, and according to ARIN and a lot of upscale providers, they all
recommend (for the most part) that you use Name Base Virtual Hosting, as
opposed to IP based. Why? Mainly because of the dwindling number of IP
addresses available.

It is not so much a question of what is good or bad. There are a number
of considerations:
1. Will your ISP give you more?
2. Do the they charge for them?
3. Do you or your customers want an individual IP address for their
domain/s to create some sort of anomenity?
Most providers will charge you for them, mainly because they have to pay
for them, and account for them, etc. The brunt of the cost comes from
the administration of them, ie., maintaining routing tables, filling out
Paper work to let ARIN know what you are doing with them.
It is a myth that you need an individual IP for every domain. Also, you
do not need them for secure servers, etc.

Well, before you say the "I" word, (interNIC) do realize that they are no
longer what they were. There are several choices out there. You may look
to register.com or any number of Domain Registries now available. Each
has step by step instructions on how to register a domain. You do not
need to give/list the IP you were given with NetworkSolutions, InterNIC,
or anyone for that matter. You will simply need to list the IP address/s
and name/s of your name servers were your domain (which will be
associated with your IP address/s) zone files are located.
Pick up a copy of DNS and BIND by Orielly and Associates.
