I would be part of it too. You are not the only one!
I couldn't agree more with you. My own story is that a few month's back, I
purchase one RaQ2+ unit. I use it for a few days and really liked it. So, I
purchase 8 more units. I switch some DNS servers, mail, Web, etc. All was
working great until I got one problem. They did research and call Cobalt. Oh
well! What a wakeup call for me. I have to be fair here and also say that I
am new to Linux and wanted to give a fair try to it. I am working with
Microsoft and Compaq product for years and I know pretty well my way around
MS and also Cisco Product. Also program for years in C, C++, Java, ASP. etc.
So, I figure, well, it is not so hard to learn Linux and jump into it.
Bought some O'Reilly book and here I am.
Ask some really basic questions on support list and I am sure some of them
look dummy. But one thing I learn a long time, there is no stupid questions,
it is just stupid not to ask them and get in more trouble. Everyone started
some place and had to learn.
Anyway, my problem is from the fact that when ask Cobalt for help on what
ever you want, except the very obvious answer to questions on how to use the
Cobalt web interface for what Cobalt have fix as service you should use
there server for, you will not get anywhere, unless you are very lucky!
For my own point of view, if I had to do it all over again, I would sure
think twice before buying the product again. It is just to bad, because they
have a very well package product that can sale well to ISP and other. I am
the owner of my own business with two other partners and we have a lot of
servers all running on Compaq and MS. This was a try. It fit well on space
setup for ISP, but also one point that Cobalt should understand, you can
sale a lot of product, but it is in the long run that a company will grow
and for now, they sure don't pay as much attention as they should for the
users that are the most likely to help them sale there product. Who else
will buy the product if not the most risk taker. That mean all of you guys
out there that give them a first chance and continue to do so even after
repeatedly disappointing support from Cobalt it self.
I have to say that, if Compaq would come out with the same idea of a box, I
would simply switch to it without looking back. I found a very nice one from
IBM that also is 1 rack space and this one include dual Pentium III and even
dual SCSI drive. Sure can be use as a high end server!
Don't get me wrong here. I think Cobalt have a great product that could go
very far with the devoted Linux users that only dream to put a hole in the
empire of MS, myself included! But this will not happen without proper
support and contact with the users out there.
For what it is worth, and feel free to tell me to shut it off, but I sure
was hoping for more and this is coming from a users that didn't know
anything about Linux a few months back. I read book and learn by my own
mistake! So far, all the answer I got, except one, always come form the
list, because Cobalt is no where to be found! Even now, after few email to
the customer support and an RMA in good form, I still wait to ear from them
to ship back a unit that have hardware defective. I started the process over
3 1/2 weeks ago now. I even receive an email from cobalt software developer
support that he would talk tot the responsible person and would speed up the
process. WOW!!! What a reaction speed that is. I sure don't want to see it
if they take there time!
I am usually very patient person, but they sure are testing my patience!
Anyway, without wanting to offense anyone out there, I had to share my point
of view on the Cobalt product and support.
