[cobalt-developers] Final XTR Gentoo Problem

Ok,
I have Gentoo installed. After looking at the XTR's interesting raid
and partitioning scheme I have gone with my own. Many partitions all
being RAID 5. Not like the mixed levels of RAID originally on the XTR.

So far everything works, but I have one issue. I can't boot a kernel
from disk. If I enter the rom menu and do a bfx r d, using the ROM's
kernel the machine comes up and is alive. Missing only devfs and NLS
support.

When I try to boot from disk via cmos settings or via the rom menu, bfd.
I the machine hangs at

First stage kernel (Linux): Decompressing - done

After a minute or so the machine restarts and without intervention will
loop like that. I have a custom kernel ready to go, but it doesn't even
get close to booting it.

I thought even when booting from disk it would initially boot the rom
kernel and then my custom kernel.

Maybe it's the rom version. Currently I am using 2.10.1. I was going
back and forth between rom versions for other reasons. Actually other
ROMS would hang during boot. Usually further in the process when booting
from disk.

I do have /boot and / on separate partitions. Hopefully that is not the
problem.

In the rom boot menu I have to have the set/read_root_dev to md2 in
order to boot using the rom kernel.

My / is on md2

My /boot is on md0

so I have set/read_boot_dev to md0.

What's going on. Why is it hanging on the first stage? I will try other
roms to see if that's the case with all. However I think the other roms
are buggy. Thus using 2.10.1 instead of 2.10.2 or 2.10.3.
