Thanks for your replies, they were really helpful.
The problem was that the /var partition was 100% full. Apparantly this is a
common problem, but few people are aware of it & it is therefore common for
machines to be declared dead and sent back to the factory unnecessarily.
Someone advised me to do "df -h" and it showed the problem immediately. So I
deleted some logs from /var/log (e.g. the maillog was 60Mb since last
December!) and cleared up some space, and now it's all working fine.
