I'm sure an official sounding note will be packaged up
soon, but as part of the EOL process for the Qube, Sun
has decided to open source the Cobalt developed portions
of the Qube distribution.
A Readme, md5sum and tarball have been posted in the FTP
directory:
ftp://ftp-eng.cobalt.com/pub/unsupported/qube3/OSS/
This is nearly a 40 MB file, so we are hoping for mirrors
to do sensible things.
Duncan Laurie, one of our Linux kernel engineers has
already set up a sourceforge project for the boot rom
environment. I expect a Sausalito project will follow
when someone inclined toward user mode gets to it.
The README file contains the text attached below.

======================================================================
5 June 2003
Sun Cobalt Open Source Qube3 v1.0 Distribution.
LICENSES: All software in this distribution, except files contained in the
rom/ directory tree, are subject to the terms of the license file
"sun_bsd.txt" located in the directory root of this distribution. All
files contained in the rom/ directory tree are subject to the terms of the
license file "gpl.txt" located in the directory root of this distribution.
In simpler terms: The ROM code is now licensed GPL due to its close
integration with Linux kernel code, and the rest of the software
(including the appliance user interfaces and backend daemons) are now
subject to a Sun specific variant of the BSD license.
The Qube3 distribution is composed of many publicly available RPM software
packages that can be downloaded in source or binary form from:
ftp://ftp.cobalt.sun.com/pub/products/qube3/
This Sun Cobalt Open Source Qube3 Distribution is a collection of source
code not previously available to the public.
This Distribution is UNSUPPORTED software.
