Howdy, y'all:
We have maintained, used and still will use SUN/Cobalt servers, but...
I agree with Peter 100%, thank goodness that a very nice and "big in Japan"
(lol, I mean) Europe100% GPL webadmin for 1 to 1000's of servers ( fully
automates apache,bind,sendmail,pop3,imap,webmail,radius,ipnumber
manager, firewall and qos manager) is available to replace the Cobalt
slooooow and error prone admin (SUN inherited this so they can't be held
100% responsible.)
I admit we our somewhat biased but our download numbers
www.openisp.net/usage and www.freshmeat.net activity rates are objective
measurements.
We have maintained, used and still will use SUN/Cobalt servers. But SUN
knows that small format reliable boxes with RH will always be cheaper in the
long run and be admin'd and up2date'd faster and smoother than the old
Cobalt headache with widely available GPL tools. As one example -but
outstanding example- of many:
www.openisp.net
mysqlISP runs all subsystems below
mysqlApache
mysqlSendmail
mysqlRadius
mysqlRadacct
mysqlIPM
Modified Qualcomm qpopper 4 for very useful SMTP-AFTER-POP
Modified Cistron 1.6.6 for very useful SMTP-AFTER-AUTH
And even for the non technical front office a !NOT GPL! ism|4 interface to
all the above.
Contact Ron Fenlon at webmaster @ mtwi. net for US and CANADA detailed info.
If you need help we just changed a Raq550 to a mysqlISP managed system. Bye
warranty but now the box is very useful to a medium ISP in LA, before it was
a joke as a multiple domain mail server system.
Best Regards,
Sebastian Borracer
