whatever you do, approach the CMU with caution when using the Japanese OS.

doing a CMU export from a Japanese Raq4 or Raq3 will do lots of funky things 
to the Japanese encoding. Seems like the Perl modules for proper encoding 
arent on the pre-550 Raqs.

Importing from the Japanese version into the Raq550 needs special attention 
(besides all the duplicated usernames - argh!!) to ensure that the mangled 
characters resulting from the export dont interfere with the script.

I ended up writing a series of bash scripts to work through the XML file and 
strip out the Japanese "name" field, etc.

took about 80 hours to import 1300 users and 375 websites in Japanese.
