The only way is if they were chown'ed by someone logged in as root or a
script running as root.

The pwd for root is the same as for admin unless you logged in via the shell
as root and ran "passwd" and updated it. Since you don't recall logging in
as root that's doubtful unless someone else did. Unless you modified a
Cobalt script, changing the admin password via the GUI will also change
root's password to the same password. If none of this works there are other
options, but I won't waste your time or mine unless these suggestions fail.
