RE: [cobalt-developers] Creating a pkg file

.pkg file is a tar.gz file, but it is just renamed as .pkg file.

While mechanically, a package file is compressed using tar and gzip, this information is incomplete and therefore not correct.

A Sun Cobalt package file is a web-installable wrapper that can contain one or more rpm or tar files, in addition to the special installation scripts. It will also include any UI elements to integrate an application into the Sausalito UI of a Qube 3 or RaQ 550 server appliance.

The suffix .pkg is not unique; Sun uses it for a different type of file within Solaris; Apple used it for AppleLink files years ago, and currently uses it within Mac OS X.

For Linux applications, I recommend .rpm files over simple .tar files. These should work on vanilla Red Hat Linux. Then wrap them in the specific .pkg file for the server appliance you are targeting. (Each one of Sun Cobalt's server appliances has slightly different pkg file formats; you need to use the right one for a package to install and operate correctly.)

Full details of each package file format are available from the free Sun Cobalt Developer Network at http://developer.cobalt.com/

So it
is not any relations with the Solaris kinda .pkg file. Simple use tar
command to create an archive with its special file/dir structures.

To learn how to use tar:

man tar

everthing is there..
