Re: Fw: [cobalt-developers] Java

Java installs nicely on the Raq, no different than another Linux/Unix based machines. Although the rpm, and tarballs leave some things out. You may still need to set some Environment variables like JAVA_HOME, JAVA_PATH, and most important CLASSPATH.

I prefer to put these into the /etc/profile file, and make entries below the PATH env. var. This will ease any manual Java development or code compilation.

If you need a good Java Application Server, JRun plays very well with Apache and Cobalt Raq's. Its a bit pricey, but worth the expense. You can install a free Developer edition, and if you like, buy a license, enter the license/serial number & the Dev edition is upgraded to what ever version you bought. No further installation is required.

Just some additional info.

What model of cobalt have you?

we install jdk1.3 on raq4 without problem, just using rpm from

java.sun.com

for redhat.

if you have a mips procesor (raq2), then you must install Kaffe VM, and

the

package is on develpoer.cobalt.com

I want to implement Java on my servers, and have a quick question:

What version and configuration is recommend to be installed to allow all
vsite access to java and java complier? Has somebody built a package for
Java outside of the outdated one on the developers network?

Any advise on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JDP
