People at IBM always make me laught.

Cobalt Kernel isn't very diffrent from a original kernel.org version. 
They only add support for:
1. LCD panel.
2. Build in temperatur meter.
3. Watchdog - to propertly reboot machine.
4. Some bugfixes in ethernet driver.
They also appiled hedrick ide patch and also raid patch, but almost all
of linux distribution mentioned above have this patches too.

So as you see all this things are only minor changes.

Forget about instaling any other distribution it will never work.

Tray to install all updates from http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/
and if that doesn't help you use "strace" to find out what is realy
going on.
