Re: [cobalt-developers] OS Restore on a live LAN

Hi Guys,

Although Cobalt say to use a cross-over cable or an isolated LAN when doing
an OS Restore I tried it over a live LAN. The RaQ3 was connected to the
100Mb backbone, the PC to a 10Mbps switched port ... OS Restore happened
without a hitch.

The OS Restore CD, as part of its operation, sets up a DHCP server to lease out addresses. Any other computer starting network services on the same network segment might see that DHCP server and acquire one of these temporary addresses -- which are only designed to be
used within the context of the software load of the OS Restore.

There was however an interesting side effect ...

Any Win9x PC booted while the OS Restore workstation was running failed to
authenticate (i.e. network logon). The problem was resolved when I shutdown
the OS Restore PC.

The solution of course is do as recommended, but I'd be interested to know
why this happened.

Cheers, Malcolm
