i changed the servername directive; this does not change the mentioned
behavior (even i don`t understand why). 

but it messes up logrotate. path to the httpd logfiles seems to be
extracted from httpd.conf, so logrotate searches for a log that doesn`t
exist.
i did not examine the cgi scripts doing that job, so i don`t knoow how
to avoid this.
seems to a be cobalt-specific problem (or is it a feature ? :-)
