ftp root access is VERY bad and a BIG security breach. you should upload
as anyone else, then get shell access (ssh instead of telnet!), su to
root, move the files and change ownership.
if you do that regularly, a tool like ytree (simple, but cool
xtree-style file manager) could be useful. cinstalls without problems
and works good with any terminal client.
