Jerry,
I agree with you. We sell plenty of the apc units to people who want brand
name but when we get to reccomend a back up it is always mge. They are great
units and we always are able to sell them at a great pricing.

Subject: [cobalt-developers] My 2cents on UPS
All,
As most of you have noticed the docs and
methodological support for using UPS with Raq3i
is all but non-existent. As part of our
recent Raq3i provisioning, I looked into
various UPS providers. While APC is a market leader,
their units are large, generate substantial heat, and
$/VA cost is steep. I stumbled upon another company
MGE at www.mgeups.com. They make a 1200VA unit (The Pulsar Ellipse 1200) for
about $500 (considerably less than the 1200+VA APC unit)
that uses high-freq switching technology--yeilding 13.5" x 13.5" x 3"
box that is almost non-heat producing.
NOTE: The MGE unit comes in USB or Serial and while Raq3i has USB,
no software for support of USB under Linux exists at MGE--so be sure
to get the Serial model if you're interested.
The software supplied by MGE for Linux is not great, but it does work,
and allows for the proper shutdown intervals and procedures.
A Raq3i without robust UPS support is an accident waiting to happen.
Cobalt needs to close the loop here. Appliance provider or no, a complete
solution is a complete solution and to have poor Lyle dredging through
his grey-matter archive to remember a half-done hack shows that
Cobalt Product Management is not attending to these details.
IMHO this is a better deal than APC and I would ask each of you
to look at it and if you feel as I do, urge Cobalt to:
1) Better document UPS selection, use, and installation.
2) Support this unit or viable alternates
JP
PS> Isn't it about time all of these lists were turned into a BBoard
or moderated newsgroup off an internal feed? All this quoting and
discontinuous posting makes following any issue a serious
pain-in-the-ass. Discus is a free BBoard package
http://www.discusware.com/discus/ (note: some manual security
patching should be done with respect to perms and such) that is one
option.
