I use a restore disk on test RaQ3i almost weekly. The procedure I use is
listed below:
1) Boot a PC, from the restore CD, that has a 10/100 NIC (NOTE: I use a
3COM 905b 10/100, Does not work with the 905c) also the card must support
100Mbit
2) Plug a cross connect patch cable from eth0 on the RaQ to the PC's NIC
3) Power off the RaQ3i (Hold the "S" key until menu, then press the "S" key
until you see power off. Now press the "E" key, then the "<" to select yes,
and the "E" key again)
4) While holding the "S" key down on the RaQ power on the RaQ. You should
see "Cobalt Networks" then a menu will be presented. Press the "S" key until
you see "boot from net" then
Press the "E" key. You will see booting. You should notice some CD-ROM
activity on the PC. Next you will see a Select Install Screen on the LCD.
Choose RaQ3i and then press the "E" key
The RaQ then re-partitions the drive, formats it, and installs all the
RPMs from the CD to it.
5) After all RPMs are copied the RaQ3i will reboot and configure it's self,
It will then say it is safe to power down. Power off the unit, unplug the
cross connect and then plug in your pipe. Now
power on the RaQ3i and wait you will be presented with the "Enter
Primary IP, 000.000.000.000 prompt" just like when you got it from cobalt.
Additional Info:
I use a Null Modem cable plugged between ttys0 (COM1) on the RaQ and a COM
port on a 2nd PC running a Term emulator at 15200, 8,n,1. This allows me to
see the restore process take place. There are other advantages
to the serial cable, for instance you can hit "space" bar when the RaQ is
booting and get a custom cobalt prompt which will help you boot modified
kernels and give you diagnostics info. (NOTE: use the "?" for help at
the prompt)

Hi Barry,

Note that should be when turning on the power!
I have a similar problem.
It seems to me that when my PC boots from the recovery disk it is unable to
recognise the ethernet card I have and therefore can't effect a network
boot for the Qube. I have tried three ethernet cards but with no success.
I'd be interested to see it this is a common problem.
