Thanks for the info. The gui is extremely important to the client who's
having this problem; we can't remove sendmail.

I certainly do understand that. The MTA I happen to understand best is
Mailtraq (at "http://www.mailtraqna.com/"; it's my site). Unfortunately
it only runs on Windows <frown>.
So do you know enough about Sendmail to understand why it goes from
"accepting" to "denying" and then just disappears out of the ps list
(and the .pid file disappears as well) when there's a lot of outgoing
messages in /var/spool/mqueue?
