Actually this depends on which version of Cobalt's system you
are using.  For instance, the RaQ's distribution did not use
shadow passwords where as the RaQ2 uses shadow passwords.

Furthermore, it's a good idea to check for both /etc/passwd*
and /etc/shadow* to see if there are any older known copies
at hand.  That and spend a little time in passwd(5) and shadow(5)
before venturing in to edit the passwd field of the root
account to grant you access once more.
